June 13, 2020
Hi All,
The
2020 version of the Hendersonville to Savannah ride (H2O) is nowofficially defunct.
My carrier, Air New Zealand, has just reported to its home stock exchange that it does not propose to resume long-haul flights before the end of 2020. Add to that, the Aussie Govt. has recently extended its bio security (i.e., mandatory) ban on outbound travel until 17 September, 2020.
I've cancelled all the motel reservations I had booked on behalf of the group and re-scheduled them for the May/June 2021 period.
The structure of the tour as I currently envisage it is detailed in the attachment.
A few comments....
As to overnight destinations, it seems an age since I was considering a haunted motel en route to Winchester. That didn't work out.
I've re-engineered the western approach to Atlanta, to give the best shot of experiencing the Silver Comet Trail, while still positioning for a route that
avoids the downtown.
East and south of Atlanta, I strove to avoid accommodation establishments that were apparent flea pits, adversely reviewed, the only game in town, or didn't
have a website. Occasionally, a single establishment met all four of those negative criteria!
The expected nightly cost still works out at around the $50 per head mark on a twin-share basis. The room rate is also shown, for anyone who prefers
that basis and almost all motels can provide a roll-away, if desired. Breakfast arrangements are covid-impaired right now but hopefully will be fully available by ride time.
The resultant tour structure is not ideally balanced but does work within the relevant constraints and remains relatively conservative in terms of daily
mileages, climb elevation and frequency of rest days. All draft routes are accessible on Ride with GPS via the link provided and comments and/or suggestions for improvement will receive appropriate attention.
All this is repeated on the Crazy Guy on a Bike website: https://bicyclelife.topicwise.com/doc/?o=1mr&doc_id=20626&v=Ad
Ride safely
Bob
